Mykines

Mykines is the most westward island of the entire archipelago, and is renowned for the incredible variety of birds that live there especially in the summertime.

In Mykines, there are only 10 inhabitants living there all year long in just three of the forty houses of the island. Instead, sheep amount to 1,200!

The church was built in 1878, and the school in 1894.

North of Mykines, there is Korjadalur Valley, where there is a stone forest, formed by a great number of basalt columns.

Samal Joensen-Mikines (1906 - 1979), one of the most important Faeroese painters, was born and raised in Mykines, living in “Innistova”, a 100-year-old house.

The island can be reached via sea (from May to October), or on helicopter. Obviously, this happens according to the whimsical weather conditions, which sometimes hinder the communications with the other Faeroe Islands. Even if one plans to spend only a couple of hours in Mykines, he could most likely remain there for some days!
