Postal History

Klaksvik

Only two years after the institution of Tórshavn Post Office in 1870, a regular link with the northern islands were established, making use of a route passing through Søldarfjørður, Syðrugøta, Gøtugjóv, Norðagøta and Leirvík and finally reaching Klaksvík. The first mailman was Conrad Nicolaisen of Tórshavn

Klaksvík Post Office was opened in 1888. As in other disticts, the Post Office was located within a police station. The officer in Klaksvík was Clement Olsen, from Toftanes in Leirvík, who kept the job for almost forty years, from 1871 to 1910.

Only in 1911 the Post Office had its own private room, still within the police station, until in 1927, needing more space, the police station moved to another building.

A few years later, in 1947, the office was restored and, in 1966, it moved to a new location downtown where it still is today.

Initially, Klaksvík Post Office had many sub-offices in the nearby villages of Syðradalur, Húsar, Mikladalur and Trøllanes. In the Isle of Kunoy in Kunoy and Haraldsund, and in Bordoy in the villages of Árnafjørður, Norðdepil and Múli. In the Isle Viðoy a Viðareiði and Hvannasund and finally in Kirkja and Hattarvík in the Fugloy area and in the island-village of Svínoy.

Today only four offices are left (Viðareiði, Svínoy, Kirkja and Hattarvík); the other villages are served by Klaksvík Post Office, today managed by Jóhan Sigurðsson.
